Thank you so much for your help!

But you forgot to mention that you are also doing a lot of voice work in the podcast :)
The fact that you are actually voicing the lead male plus two additional characters in Wiener Blut !!

Thanks Russ, your feedback is welcome!

Yes, that is an eBow that you hear - the rest of the instrumentation is fairly standard - bass, electric guitar, piano and drums.

I have sent the lyrics through now that you've reminded me, so they should appear on the Bandcamp page, but here they are as well:

[Verse1]
There's a boy scout, a bat and an Amazon
Some guy with wings on his head
A bunch of dudes with ring fetishes
And a Robin Hood wannabe
They're the team who're supposed to be
Keeping us safe in our bed

[Chorus]
But they don't want me in
Their super-team
They've got all the powers they need
(So they say)
They don't care that I can
Move planets with a thought
"We've got your number
We might call you some day..."

[Verse 2]
There's a defrosted patriot, a drunk tin man,
A wife-beating giant-come-ant
A thunder god with a boomerang hammer
And a Robin Hood wannabe
They're the team that's supposed to be
Protecting when webcrawlers can't

[Chorus]

Enjoyed "They Don't Want Me." Nice to hear more shadows, even now. Cool instrumentation! Are you playing an eBow? Could you get Travis "Spintown" Langworthy a copy of the lyrics, so he can put them on the bandcamp page? Currently your song is the only one without lyrics there.

I am very happy you enjoyed it and even ecstatic to know that you can sell your old gear to a museum and not only on eBay. You might get an iMac out of it.... :)

I just read the blog you posted up and it brought tears to my eyes reminiscing in memories 12 years ago when I myself once had a band as well..
We played in the basement/garage, we performed in talent shows/pubs, we did everything right, we got a record deal with some small time corp, but now I still remain a plumber in misery. Hey ya'll, pursue your dream, dont let it fall out! Make your dream come through because only you can make it true :)

Thanks Angela - the link was absent because the vote was delayed (some server problems at the quickstop site, apparently).

You may well be at least partly representative, as the song is currently resting within the higher reaches of the voting chart.

I'm sure there's a song somewhere waiting to be written using only captcha phrases!

The lyrics alone made me squeal with delight (I once got a poem published which mentioned hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride, so I don't know if I'm representative of the rest of the audience), I can't wait to hear it. (Or is there already a link I didn't notice?)

My captcha was 'ultratin'. If I ever discovered a new element, that's what I'd name it.

@Rusty

Molly does come with a legion of fans - who can argue with that?

I suspect the "tiny tin didgeridoo" is actually the Crumar string synth - it provides the standard string wash, but also has a 'brass' setting, which is nice and farty and on this song certainly is fairly frog-like.

The yobstick? More info in the 'yobstick' item listed under "Common Topics", about 25 items down. It has 3 main sounds, but only 1 is featured here - it's pretty similar to a tambourine.

Thanks for the comment and good luck to you too - we'll need it!

Ah, everyone in the Song Fu competition is getting pwned by Molly Lewis!

Mick, thanks for posting the lyrics. I really enjoy your song, "Happy People."

I don't know how I missed the word "Drowning" the first time I listened to your song. Now that IS ominous.

I'm very flattered that you quoted my comments. I actually worked for a bit to come up with the metaphor for the sound, "toads playing tiny tin didgeridoo." Is that sound the yobstick? What's a yobstick?

Anyway, good luck in Round 2.

Rock on,
Russ

Yes, I did - one of those rare opportunities that I would have kicked myself for years had I missed out on. Like the time I passed over a Korg MS10 for £50 before analogue synths came back into fashion.

Having great fun with it so far - so much to learn!

Hi Tom
There used to be a description on the Deserters website, but that page is down as part of the site makeover.
There are a couple of pictures of part of it at the website on the biography page, in the section headed THE GREAT SUMMER OF '83.

In a nutshell, it's a combined bass & percussion instrument. At the bottom is a welly boot which is stamped on the ground to provide a kick drum sound. At the top is an array of several dozen bottle tops which act as a tambourine/cymbal substitute. In the middle is a
bungie cord with beer tray resonator which acts as a single-note bass.
The yobstick in the pictures was my first one, and was well-used by the time the pictures were taken.

It was originally designed to accompany acoustic performers, usually singer & guitarist in late-night lock-ins at the pub, but has ended up on several Deserters recordings.
